The number of fishermen increased by 34% and vessels by 54% from 1995 to 2005. Lack of environmental education, government support and community empowerment jeopardizes management possibilities. Peru’s coast represents 1 of 25 worldwide biodiversity hotspots. Our highly productive ocean habitats play a critical role in local and global food security. Coastal communities dependent on the ocean’s health and productivity could be the most effective environmental stewards.
